Pathways to the Future: The Senior School Journey

Torrens Valley Christian School is preparing young people for the future. Senior School embraces the final three years of schooling: Years 10, 11 and 12. These years are the culmination of all the effort and inspiration of our students learning in Primary and Middle School. It is a time when students explore and develop their special gifts and talents in preparation to leave school and enter the world of work and tertiary study. At Torrens Valley Christian School, we provide four distinct learning journeys to choose from, pathways that will equip our students for employment, VET study or Tertiary Education. Our learning environment has been established to support our school’s mission to provide excellence in education. We seek to honour God’s image in our students through offering them multiple opportunities to learn about themselves and their role in the renewal and restoration of our world. Our Senior School curriculum offers rigour, innovation and flexibility that enables our graduates to develop their full academic, creative, personal, moral and spiritual potential. Our graduates have the opportunity to develop and equip their minds, cultivate a heart that looks out for others and apply their hands to building skills and capabilities according to their God-given gifts and interests. Our core values in Senior School reflect three Biblical callings:

Stewardship – Caring for and developing God’s creation (Genesis 1: 26 – 28)
Discipleship – Growing as disciples of Jesus and taking the good news of Jesus out into the world ((Matthew 28: 18-20)
Living well - Care of self and others, with love being the key ingredient (Ephesians 4:29 to 5:2)

Our fundamental aim is to send each of our students out into the world ready and able to lead a happy and fulfilling life, serving God and making a difference in the world. We hope that they will become life-long leaners, continuing to grow in their understanding and love of God and His creation.

As a Christian school, it is our Deep Hope that through completing their schooling, our students will be excited about the opportunity their studies offer them, developing their curiosity as learners, and their God given talents and interests.

It is our firm belief that God has a great plan and purpose for each of our students, R -12, and that it is our exciting task at Torrens Valley Christian School, in partnership with parents, to help them discover what these are. A Commendation…

In June 2020 the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) was tasked to undertake a review of the Australian Curriculum for Foundation to Year 10 (F-10). Under this review, eight learning areas from Foundation to Year 10 will be reviewed with the next version of the Australian Curriculum published on an approved website by early 2022.

Well done Danny – State Cross Country Championships

Congratulations to Danny, who ran in the State Cross Country Championships on Sunday. Even though he wasn’t feeling too great on the day, he still managed a wonderful time, running 1.5km on a hilly course in 5.10. He missed out on gold by just 1 second. Even though Danny is still only in Year 5, he has been accepted into a senior training group two years earlier than he should have been. Now the focus is back on the track and he is excited for the season ahead.

FIRST Lego League at TVCS

A small contingency of students have been involved in the FIRST Lego League Competition for the last four years. Our wonderful Head of eLearning, Mrs Fiona Clayton, has coordinated this with the students involved mostly in her free time.

Once again, we will have two teams representing TVCS at this year’s FIRST Lego League tournament. The theme this year is RePLAY and the project will get our students thinking about how to encourage people to be more active.

Week 5 and 6 Hot Lunches

The next two items on the Hot Lunches Menu are Pulled Chicken Burrito Bowl (Week 5) and Japanese Bento Box – Teriyaki Beef (Week 6). Yum!

Come and see what’s happening in our TVCS Playgroup

Playgroup has recommenced! You are invited to come along to our playgroup on Fridays each fortnight at 9.00am (odd weeks).

Our next session will be on Friday, 21 August. If it will be your first visit, please complete the attached Playgroup Enrolment Form. We are looking forward to seeing you.

National Tree Day

Last Monday we had a group of enthusiastic students put their green thumbs into action for National Tree Day.

Students planted three new saplings ever so carefully in freshly dug holes. Thank you to all teachers involved and well done to those students who ‘branched out’ to help.

Bali Life fundraiser results

On Friday 7 August students enjoyed a Casual Clothes Day to raise money for the Bali Life Foundation.

As a school we raised over $2,200! Well done to everyone involved. We are blessed to have such a generous school community.

Term 3 Earth Day – Wednesday 19 August

On Wednesday 19 August our school will be participating in Earth Day with a focus on ‘Sustainability’. Earth Day at TVCS aims to teach students about how to care for our Earth, God’s beautiful creation.

If possible, please consider making Earth Day a ‘nude food’ day (no plastic lunch wraps, chip packets etc). Our students are aiming to keep their bins clear of waste.

Primary Worship Assemblies recommenced

Sir Lost-a-Lot saved the day and rescued Lady Lucy from the evil Sir Wickedness, thanks to the help of the King! 1K’s funny and interactive play about the Armour of God was one to remember.

Reception H shared the stage to start us off with a lively African song, and Mrs Clayton announced the winners of the Minecraft competition.

It was wonderful to be back meeting together again in Assembly after a long break.

Year 9 students Walk a Mile for the homeless

In place of our Winter Sleep Out which usually has a “homeless” focus, this year, we are participating in the “Walk a Mile” campaign in support of the homeless in South Australia.

All funds will go to Hutt St Centre which serves up to 40,000 meals a year and offers social work and support services to nearly 2,000 people. Showers, laundry facilities, visiting health professionals, an aged city living program for our older clients, recreational activities, training and employment programs, legal aid and assistance with finding housing are all services provided to up to 200 people challenged by homelessness each day.

Outdoor Education camp

Last week 14 students and two staff took part in the first Outdoor Education Camp at Stage 1.

The students canoed the backwaters of the Murray River along Ral Ral Creek NE of Renmark, completing around 30 kilometres over the three days – what a feat!

Year 7 Camp

Recently, the Year 7’s went on camp to Nunyara, Belair and had a blast!

There were lots of activities to do like tree-climbing, billycart racing, basket weaving and discovery hikes, just to name a few. There was also the campfire (marshmallows included) and the Red Faces talent show.
