Old Scholars Story: Jacob Manuel, working in a Global Engineering Firm

By Communications Team News, Senior 1/08/2022

Since finishing Year 12 in 2019 I have started a 3-year-long apprenticeship in Digital Engineering at Mott MacDonald, a global engineering and development consulting firm. The apprenticeship is a first of its kind, with hands-on experience in real day-to-day challenges, taking part in real projects across South Australia and gaining a nationally accredited Diploma of Applied Technologies.

Throughout school and even late high school I was unsure of what I wanted to do once I finished Year 12. I spent my first year out of school working multiple jobs trying to find where I wanted to go with my career.

I was introduced to this apprenticeship in late 2020 and quickly submitted my application! Before I knew it, I was working full-time in a global engineering firm!! Now I am just over halfway through my apprenticeship, and each day continues to provide new challenges and opportunities. Some projects I have had the opportunity to work on since I started are:

-The newly constructed Ovingham overpass

-The to-be-constructed Central Markets redevelopment.

Keeping a strong work ethic has helped me adjust to full-time work and keeps my life organised whilst I try to balance a healthy work-life balance. In my free time, I go to the gym 4 days a week, play basketball Monday nights and volunteer Friday nights. Mott MacDonald has been the perfect company as they continue to help me build my career and keep me involved in many projects across South Australia.
