TVCS wins major Tennis SA Award

By Emily Morton Primary, Home, News 11/05/2022

Torrens Valley received the “Most Outstanding School” Tennis Award recently at the annual Tennis SA Awards night, held at the Adelaide Convention Centre! This was a very significant award to receive and a great honour. It was the wonderful culmination of the efforts of many people-students, parents and staff over quite a few years.

The tennis journey at TVCS began with tennis being offered as a sport at Torrens Valley since the early days of the school’s establishment. Initially, some secondary classes participated in tennis during PE lessons at Hope Valley Tennis Club. Teams played in the local Vista Secondary Schools weekly competition.

Since the introduction of the Tennis Hot Shots program (students begin in Reception), participation has grown rapidly. This modified form of tennis with its smaller racquets, larger slower balls and smaller courts makes it much easier for young children to experience success and the joy of hitting a tennis ball. Students then progress to using faster, smaller balls (from green to orange and finally yellow) on tennis courts with full sized racquets.

Torrens Valley’s Year ¾ Hot Shot teams have been very successful during recent years. TVCS won the 2020 City State competition defeating PAC in the final! TVCS again made the City State final in 2021 but this time were runners-up to PAC in the final. Congratulations to all players on these fine achievements and most of all for the friendly fair way you played.

This summer tennis season, 39 students received coaching through our affiliated club coach, Josh Crowe, at Hope Valley Tennis Club, increasing from 29 students in 2021. There are also a significant number of students playing and receiving coaching at other local clubs such as Tea Tree Gully, Athlestone, ETKG, Clearview etc. The contribution of Josh Crowe to students’ enjoyment of tennis and skills development has been an important one.

We hope to see students continuing to have fun playing tennis in the years ahead.
